Operational and Physical Risk

  • In China last week, an explosion at a chemical plant in Yibin City, Sichuan Province killed 19 people and injured several others. According to the official state-run media, the incident occurred at around 1830 local time on July 12.
  • Per media reports, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) stated that the number of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and acute Lyme disease cases recorded in the first half of 2018 are higher compared to the same period in 2017.
  • On July 7, only 24 hours after announcing a double-digit price hike for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, Haiti’s Prime Minister assured that the measure was temporarily suspended. However, violent protests over the fuel price increases continued; demonstrators erected flaming roadblocks, protested on the streets, and some attacked hotels and businesses.

  • On July 13, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a circular directing stockbrokers to stop accepting cash from their clients; the notice is against direct cash payments as well as cash deposits to the stockbroker’s bank account.
  • Per reports on July 8, new registration rules have been implemented in Russia that will require landlords to register foreign nationals with the Federal Migration Service (FMS) for a residential permit. Earlier, the employers could register their foreign employees.
  • On July 9, U.S. President Donald Trump slammed several U.S. and international drug manufacturers via Twitter for having raised prices on prescription drugs on July 1.

Technology and Information Risk

  • Per reports, Twitter has increased its crackdown on fake user accounts and bots, suspending over 1 million accounts a day.
  • The McAfee Security Research team announced on July 11, 2018, that they found online shops selling Remote Desktop Protocols (RDP) to access computer systems responsible for security and other critical infrastructure.
  • Financial authorities have asked banks in Mexico to strengthen security measures due to a high risk of cyber-attacks.

Hazard and Events Risk

  • Per Mexican authorities, several violent incidents occurred in Monterrey city and its metropolitan area, including a string of attacks in restaurant bars that left at least 15 dead and nine wounded people.
  • The non-governmental organization Central America Network for the Construction of Peace and Human Security has published a report titled, "Destruction of Weapons in Central America and the Caribbean."
