Hazard and Event Risks 

  • Last week, demonstrations outside Argentina’s Parliament were reported. The protests became violent after authorities responded aggressively towards protesters.
  • In India, police in Kerala State arrested approximately 2,000 people at a series of protests over allowing menstruating women to enter the Sabarimala Temple.
  • In Tunis, a woman immolated herself near a police patrol unit on the central avenue of Habib Bourgiba last week.
  • Last week, it was reported that Nigerian police had arrested approximately 400 Shia Muslims in Abuja.

  • Late last week, Brazil’s electoral authority declared Jair Bolsonaro the winner of the presidential election run-off vote, taking 55% of the vote to leftist opponent Fernando Haddad’s 44%.

  • Last week in Columbia, the Colombian Petroleum Engineers Association presented a document hoping to stop the fracking-ban project currently considered in the Congress. 
  • The President-elect of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced last week that the construction of the new airport in Mexico City will be canceled. 
  • Last week, the Chinese economic planning body proposed cutting the tax on vehicle purchases from 10% to 5% after the trade war between the U.S. and China slowed sales for several car manufacturers.
  • Speaking of China and the U.S., worldwide media highlighted the negative trend of exchange between the Chinese currency, the yuan, and the U.S. dollar last week.
