Hazard and Event Risks 

  • Last week in Guatemala, the Volcan de Fuego erupted, causing 4,000 residents in the vicinity to evacuate.
  • Non-governmental organizations reported that at least 11 people have been killed and 45 others have been wounded in clashes between police officers and many anti-corruption protesters across Haiti last week. 
  • Last week, New Zealand’s Health authorities informed of a measles outbreak in the country; furthermore, Hawke's Bay District has recounted three cases of mumps, two of which were in adults.

Operational and Physical Risks

  • A nationwide protest took place in Chile after the death of a Mapuche leader in the Araucania region last week. 
  • Earlier this month, a German court ruled that authorities must issue a ban on older diesel vehicles from portions of Essen, Gelsenkirchen, and parts of the autobahn, the German highway system. 
  • Last week it was reported that protests and blockades have continued to affect the road traffic in several towns of France. 

Technology and Information Risks

  • Reuters reported last week that the Thai government would impose a cyber-security law that would allow the government to spy on Internet users and to restrict websites with inappropriate content. 
  • Recently in the UK, the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy published its report on the vulnerabilities to the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure.
  • After the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council European Community Meeting last week, an announcement was made stating that 80% of European websites that use Magento–the most used e-commerce platform in the world-are at risk of hacking. 
  • Last week, the United States Postal Services announced that the institution has recently addressed a security vulnerability in their server’s Application Programming Interface that affected the Informed Visibility program. 

Market and Economic Risks

  • Earlier this month in Mexico, Petroleos Mexicanos Company through its Industrial Transformation division informed that they will cancel their natural gas supply contracts starting on January 1, 2019.
  • A group in charge of improving safety in the garment industry in Bangladesh made an announcement last week to global fashion firms stating that they will have to stop getting supplies from certain factories if the Accord liaison office in Bangladesh, which currently serves as a watchdog, is forced to close this month.
  • And in our last story this week, Canadian authorities are examining the current regulation that applies to the oil industry after Husky Energy was responsible for the 250,000-liter oil spill off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador on November 16.
