Hazard and Event Risks 

  • In Africa, at least 200 people died and dozens disappeared across Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi due to a tropical cyclone Idai that made landfall last week. 
  • Last week, it was reported that Dutch authorities have continued investigating the main suspect and two other people regarding the shooting that took place at central 24 Oktoberplein junction in Utrecht, where three people died, and five more were injured.
  • In Italy, local authorities rescued 51 students and their supervisors, who were abducted last week near Milan by the driver of their school bus.

Operational and Physical Risks

  • Pilots of the Indian commercial airline Jet Airways released a joint statement last week in which they notified their intention to carry out a walkout on April 1. 
  • In France, new clashes between police officers and protesters took place in Paris last week during the 18th Yellow Vest protest.
  • HP issued a recall last week of approximately 80,000 laptops sold during the period of December 2015-April 2018. 

Technology and Information Risks

  • ZOLL Medical Corporation reported a data breach that affected over 275,000 of its customers. The company informed that, during a server migration, e-mails that stored personal data were compromised.
  • Recently, the aluminum manufacturer Norsk Hydro announced that its main servers had been affected by ransomware, and thus forcing them to halt operations in facilities around Europe and the United States. 

Market and Economic Risks

  • The Japanese Finance Ministry published information regarding the country’s exports last week, and the data shows that overall exports fell around 1.2% in February, on a year over year basis. 
  • It was reported last week that the Italian ports of Genoa Palermo, Trieste, and Ravenna are likely to open for Chinese investment.
  • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced recently that the summit scheduled for this month, where Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to participate, has been postponed until the end of April.
