Hazard and Event Risks 

  • Last week, it was reported that at least 17 people were injured in Egypt after a roadside explosive device detonated and damaged a tourist bus with around 28 passengers, most of them African citizens. 
  • Indonesia’s General Election Commission confirmed last week that President Joko Widodo was reelected in the election. 
  • Canadian authorities declared 200 people at a high school in north Calgary were at risk as two people were officially reported of having tuberculosis, a highly contagious disease caused by a bacteria which mainly affects lungs. 

Operational and Physical Risks

  • It was reported that heavy rains affecting the region of the Paraguay River upstream of and surrounding Asuncion, have killed at least six residents and displaced around 60,000 families. 
  • The Panama Canal is operating with draft restrictions due to a severe drought related to El Niño last week. 
  • Last week, at least 29 tornadoes struck across Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, andIllinois states in the Unites States along with heavy rainfall, large hail, strong winds, and severe thunderstorms. 

Technology and Information Risks

  • Google reported the presence of a security bug last week in its Bluetooth Low Energy version of Bluetooth Titan Security Key. 
  • Kaspersky Lap reported last week that a North Korean Advanced Persistent Threat group called ScarCruft has created code able to access users’ personal information via devices connected to Bluetooth. 
  • It was reported that a security researcher, “Sandbox Escaper,” found a Windows 1032-bit operating system vulnerability last week, and published a demo exploit code on GitHub, as a Proof-of-Concept. 

Market and Economic Risks

  • Ford Motors announced the company would likely cut around 7,000 salaried and high-level managerial jobs last week, which represents roughly 10% of its global management personnel. 
  • Last week, Panasonic announced that it would likely abandon businesses on some components shipments to Huawei which likely violate the U.S. ban on the Chinese firm.
