Hazard and Event Risks 

  • Last week in Mexico, it was reported that at least 21 people were killed and about 40 were injured after a bus’s brakes failed and it crashed into a trailer. 
  • Local authorities reported a stabbing spree at a bus stop in Kawasaki, Japan last week where a man with a knife in each hand attacked a crowd that included school girls ages 6-12; one of the fatalities was a student, and the other was a 39-year-old man.
  • Experts from the University of York have conducted the most extensive study about the pollution of rivers around the world, and stated that there is a global health emergency due to the dangerous levels of antibiotics in the water.

Operational and Physical Risks

  • As of last week, the airspace over the Pakistan-India border will be closed until June 15, as announced by Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority. 
  • Thousands of Nicaraguans went on a nationwide strike to complain about the current government led by President Daniel Ortega last week. 
  • The Paraguay River water levels have risen approximately 23 feet in some places, affecting 70,000 people that were located close to the waterway.

  •  According to a report published by Motherboard last week, it was revealed that numerous employees of Snapchat have inappropriately used company tools to spy and access the users’ data, including videos, saved Snaps, phone numbers, location information, and email addresses. 
  • Last week, it was reported that the UK Government Communication Headquarters proposed enabling eaves dropping on encrypted chat services, such as that of Apple or Whatsapp. 
  • The European Union approved a copyright directive, which was criticized by the Polish government, as it believes the legislation will lead to censorship, which is something that the Polish constitution and several EU treaties forbid.

  • British Prime Minister Theresa May announced last week that she will resign as Conservative Party leader, as a consequence of the long-term Brexit uncertainty.
