Hazard and Event Risks

  • The Singapore Civil Aviation Authority declared unauthorized drones caused the delay of 18 flights, 15 departing, and three arrivals, at Singapore’s Changi Airport last week. 
  • Nine townships in the states of Rakhine and Chin, in Myanmar, went through a fifth day without mobile internet last week as the government established a decree to prevent an ethnic group from coordinating insurgent activities. 
  • Last week, the Air India 191 flight from Mumbai to Newark with approximately 400 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing due to an anonymous call to warn about a bomb threat. 

Technology and Information Risks

  • As reported last week, a hacker was able to access restricted documents held by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in April 2018 using aRaspberry Pi, which is a tiny single-board computer generally used as a tool for learning computer programming, robotics, and “Do it yourself” projects. 
  • As reported recently, security researchers detected a spoofing vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook for Android, which opens the door to cross-site scripting attacks. 
  • Hackers allegedly working for China’s Ministry of State Security broke into the networks of at least eight major technology services providers and retrieved sensitive information from their clients in a years-long attack, as reported last week. 

Market and Economic Risks

  • The Istanbul electorate overwhelmingly voted for the opposition secularist Ekrem Imamoglu, who represents Turkey’s Republican People’s Party, in the city’s second mayoral election this year.
  • Last week, the Chinese Agriculture Ministry announced that authorities had reported army worms in half of the country’s 38 provinces.
  • The Mexican Institute of Social Security informed that during May 2019 less than 4,000 formal jobs were created, meaning a negative job growth of 88% compared to the same month in 2018.
