Hazard and Event Risks 

  • Last week in the Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities reported that a copper and cobalt mine collapsed in Lualaba province, close to the city of Kolwezi in the southern part of the country.
  • In Afghanistan, Taliban fighters carried out a coordinated car bomb attack last week in Kabul at rush hour, which killed more than sixteen people and injured 105 people, of which 51 were children. 
  • As reported last week, Ethiopian Jewish protesters clashed with the police across Israel, after a teenager of Ethiopian descent was shot dead by an off-duty police officer. 

Operational and Physical Risks

  •  Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated last week that he will drive the creation of as many as 40,000 jobs in the northern border region for migrants waiting there for their asylum claim results from the U.S.
  • As reported last week, Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest Boing 737 Max operator, announced it is expecting to remove the grounded 737 Max from its flying schedule beyond the current October 1 re-entry date. 
  • Recently in Hong Kong, during the 22nd anniversary of Britain returning its Hong Kong colony to China, as part of the ongoing large-scale protests against Beijing’s increasing control, roughly 1,000 protesters surrounded the Legislative Council building in the city’s financial district.

  • Last week in China it was reported that the Chinese border police are secretly installing surveillance apps on the phones of visitors crossing from Kyrgyzstan to the western Xinjiang region. 
  • In the U.S., a bipartisan pair of Senators have offered a bill that would require companies that collect and use consumers’ user data to quantify the commercial value in reporting both to regulators and the consumers affected. 
  • Last week, IT firm Attunity confirmed it exposed some of its clients’ information by hosting it on an unsecured server. 

Market and Economic Risks

  • In Brazil, a group of reporters published an investigation last week on the prevalence of salmonella in the Brazilian chicken industry. 
  • Japan recently announced it would impose restrictions on exports of high-tech materials to South Korea. 
  • The Nikkei Asian Review reported that prestigious technology companies are considering relocating part of their production from China to avoid paying higher tariffs and economic uncertainty due to the trade war between the U.S. and China.
