Hazard and Event Risks 

  • Recently in Mexico, around 3,500 Mexican women gathered at Glorieta de los Insurgentes, in Mexico City, and walked around other parts of the city, including the Reforma Avenue, the District Attorney’s Office, the Secretary of Security and the Angel de la Independencia. 
  • In Brazil, a man hijacked a commuter bus last week headed to Rio de Janeiro, which had 37 passengers aboard at the time; the incident occurred on the bridge over Guanabara Bay. 
  • Recently in the US, an individual placed three rice cookers in two locations in Midtown and Lower Manhattan in New York that initially forced authorities to suspend subway and bus services.

Operational and Physical Risks

  • Earlier this month, 17 seamen were abducted from two merchant vessels in Cameroonian waters. 
  • Last week, local authorities deployed 1,200 officers to control the ongoing protests in West Papua and Papua provinces in Indonesia.
  • In the UK, a bomb exploded on Cavan Road, in Newtownbutler, near the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland recently. 

Technology and Information Risks

  • The European Central Bank reported that a cyber-attack affected their system earlier this month. 
  • Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office recently stated it was opening an investigation into the use of facial-recognition technology at London’s Kings Cross development. 
  • Earlier this month,  cyber-security researchers found that iOS 12.4, the latest version of the iPhone operating system, reintroduced a bug that facilitates jail breaking updated iPhones and hacking iPhone users. 

Market and Economic Risks

  •  Last week, it was reported that at least 70,000 investors are affected after a cleanup of Ghana’s banking industry. 
  • It was reported last week that three important banks, HSBC, Bank of East Asia, and Standard Chartered published a letter in a newspaper to urge the reestablishment of order and law, and ask for the protection of the status of Hong Kong as an international financial center. 
  • The Bank of Mexico, also known as Banxico, announced an interest rate cut from 8.25% to 8%.
