Investigator Spotlight: Kimberly Humphrey

This blog is a part of our series, Investigator Spotlights, where we will introduce you to some of Pinkerton’s investigators. When Allan Pinkerton started the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1850, the profession was not held in high regard. It was Pinkerton and his team’s skill for detective work, keen intellect, and watchful eyes that turned contempt to esteem and gave birth to the modern security industry. To be counted among Pinkerton investigators is an honor belonging to a relative few and a position reserved for the best in the field.

I would like to welcome Kimberly Humphrey, Pinkerton Investigations Unit practice leader for compliance and ethics. Let’s start with an easy one. When did you know that you wanted to be an investigator?

When I was 10 years old, my grandmother gave me a piggy bank. She told me to write down what I wanted to be when I grew up, put the paper in the piggy bank, and save to help make that dream come true. When I opened that piggy bank years later, I saw I had written, “police officer/investigator.”

Since you knew what you wanted to be when you grew up, how did you make that a reality?

Before joining Pinkerton in 2018, I worked for a large state agency where I oversaw the development and implementation of a compliance and investigative division, which included regulatory compliance, organizational management, investigative operations, training and development, and project management. The division also investigated fraud, theft, employee misconduct, abuse, harassment, and discrimination.

What does it take to be a great investigator?

I think, first and foremost, you must genuinely care about people. Our job is to assist in the process of justice. We must care about those who have been wronged — whether it be an individual or an organization/company — but we must also care about those who have been accused. It is our duty to work as hard in disproving something as we work in proving it. We need to constantly acknowledge our biases and approach every single case with an open mind and a passion for digging for the truth. Tenacity is an absolute requirement.

Why did you want to be a Pinkerton?

The Pinkerton legacy of being the first to hire a female detective is an impressive draw. Who in the world wouldn’t want to be part of this incredible history? Just as important, I believe Pinkerton has an amazing vision for the future.

Not only do I get to do a job that energizes and excites me, but I love and appreciate the collaboration within Pinkerton. I continue to meet and have the opportunity to work with experienced people with a passion for our industry, incredible integrity, and the belief that we are in the right place to make a difference.

The organizational culture fosters the idea that “teamwork makes the dream work.” I have been most impressed with how everyone comes together, shares their expertise, and focuses on how to work together to get the job done in the best way possible.

What inspires you?

My priority in my work as well as in life is “to make a difference.” I believe at Pinkerton we can all do that in our various roles. Whether I am working with an internal or external customer, I strive to provide the best service possible and approach each day with the question, “Who can I help today?”

As an investigator, you have been a part of some very memorable cases. Is there one that has made a lasting impact?

Years ago, I worked on a case that involved the death of three people at the state-run facility. The impact was significant then, and I carry it with me still. While I had known how important communication is in the totality of our jobs as investigators, this case drove that home. It was heartbreaking to speak with family members who just wanted their loved ones back. I realized at that moment how they were holding on to the things I shared with them, and they were looking to me to make it right. We carry a tremendous amount of responsibility in the jobs that we do. Never underestimate the power of a kind word and whatever information you can provide even when you don’t have all the answers.

Before we wrap up, is there anything you’d like to share?

Pinkerton’s “can do” attitude and unquestioning belief that we are the best at providing comprehensive services has led to very successful and continuing relationships with some of the country’s largest organizations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we listed contact tracing among our comprehensive solutions. At first glance, it may have appeared to be a little out of place. Early in the lockdown when we were asked if Pinkerton could provide contact tracing, the resounding answer was, “Absolutely!” It’s a testament to the solutions and customer care Pinkerton can provide.
